CHAPTER ESTABLISHMENT
The establishment of Fort Worth Southeast AARP Chapter No. 4508 was the brainchild of three ladies – Abigal Arington, Johnnie Station, and Ophelia Furlow. It was during their gathering at lunch that Mrs. Arrington, who was at the time an AARP Assistant State Director, mentioned that the Southside area should have an AARP Chapter. Mrs. Staton and Mrs. Furlow were so taken with the idea that they pursued with Mrs. Arrington the possibility of establishing the Chapter.
Consequently, upon Mrs. Arrington’s recommendation, Ret. Col. George Miller met with nine persons on March 30, 1998 at the Maddox Center. The necessary information and tools were presented to form a Chapter, and such information was immediately acted upon.
The first officers of Fort Worth Southeast AARP Chapter No. 4508 were:
- Ophelia Furlow, President
- Mary Hunt, Secretary
- Costella Zachara, Assistant Secretary
- Johnnie Staton, Treasurer
At the meeting on January 25, 1989, the Chapter officers were installed, with Mrs. Arrington and Col. Miller present. The decision was made to move the monthly meeting (on the fourth Wednesday) from the Maddox Center to the Southside Multi-Purpose Center. The first meeting in the new location was on February 22, 1989. And during the first six months of meetings, Col. Miller was present to give direction to the group.
Fort Worth Southeast AARP Chapter No. 4508 has been and continues to be involved in developing and improving programs, services, and activities to better serve the needs and interests of its members and the older population in general.
